Character Personality: Shalnark is possibly one of the cutest boys you'll ever see. Despite his huge build, he has a baby face that could be compared to an angel’s. His expressions are usually graced with a perky grin which matches the happy demeanor he gives off.. Most of the time he's pretty cheerful although there are rare moments where his serious side comes out.
After all, he's an open kind of fellow. His feelings are not hard to figure out because he puts them out for others to see. If he doesn't want a person to get hurt, he'll say so to their face. If he disagrees, he'll disagree! If he’s unhappy, he’ll straight out say so although he keeps calm when he does.
These qualities make him a really likable guy! After all, he enjoys simple things like card games and a good beer! There’s no reason to be wary, right? Weeeell, there is a part of Shalnark that makes it a teeeeeny bit hard to appreciate this good nature. Even if you can’t find a friendlier fellow, stealing and killing aren’t easy aspects to ignore nor the best traits to have.
Shalnark is number nine of the infamous group known as the Genei Ryodan. This gang is made up of thirteen thieves, with Kuroro Lucifer as the head. The members, under Kuroro’s lead, go out to steal whatever rare commodity they can find. If someone gets in their way? They die, simple as that. None of them are afraid to kill, and Shalnark is no exception.
He might not be the strongest in the Ryodan, but he definitely has other skills that stems from his straightforward personality. Along with his calm nature, these traits enable him to take the lead when the situation calls for it. He throws out the necessary plans on the spot. This makes him valuable as a member. Not only that, he’s also an information gatherer. His practical nature and his intelligence allows him to fulfill his role for the Ryodan. He does what he needs to such as acquiring a hunter license.
He obviously does this for the Ryodan and for Kuroro, his leader. Hunter licenses allow him access to information he can’t get anywhere else which in turn can help the Ryodan. However, the reason why he chooses to help the group is because he wants to. In the manga, he states he would rather die than follow someone he didn't like. Basically, he chooses to be a follower of Kuroro, not because he is threatened to do so, but because he honestly wants to. He respects his boss and wants the Ryodan to succeed, otherwise, Shal would never have joined in the first place. The Ryodan’s leader is the one he wants to follow. It’s even been stated that he might rely on his boss a little too much.
However, he will still follow the Ryodan’s code and protect the entire “spider” or the gang, itself. They did not believe that one member was more significant than the other which also includes Kuroro. The group believed that as long as the spider was still alive, then they can survive. Shalnark recognizes this and puts the spider first. He even states that members like Pakunoda and Shizuku were way more vital than the likes of him because their abilities were more beneficial to the Ryodan as a whole. Shalnark knows that he is not above the others and that whatever is best for the group is also most important.
He does care about his other members. Maybe not human life, but he values those close to him. The things he and the others do aren’t “good”, but they aren’t necessarily “evil” either. There are times where the protagonists find that the members aren’t completely dislikable even though what they do is considered wrong. The Ryodan always worked with a lawless attitude. Most came from Ryuusei, a city abandoned by society, where government and rules do not exist. They are the trash that the world did not want. It is never said where Shalnark originated from, but he is the same as the others. He, too, lives a life where law does not matter. The only thing he’ll follow is the order of the Ryodan.
On a random note, if you mess with his phone and treat it without care, he’ll get all >:o at you!

○Nen: Energy/aura that is vital for keeping someone alive. It can be used to develop various skills depending on the user.
○Black Voice: Using manipulation nen, he acquires a skill called Black Voice. If Shal succeeds in sticking an antenna in his target and no one else is controlling said target, he can control the movements of that person through the use of his special cellphone.
○Auto Mode: He can also use the antenna on himself which gives him insane amount of power. However, he is unable to think on his own during this time. He has to actually program instructions to follow. Once they are set, he can’t escape Auto Mode until he follows the instructions.
Besides those skills, he has other qualities that could be considered as “abilities”. For example, Shalnark is extremely intelligent. From the top of his head, he can provide random data that most would not nor can not remember. When another member from his group was infected with leeches, Shalnark examines one and figured out its species, its reproductive facts, the details on the eggs, how it could kill a human, and the way to kill it. With that, he was able to keep his fellow ally alive just be giving a quick glance to a single creature.
He’s also tech-smart. His technological capabilities make him one of the most useful members of the Ryodan for the sake of information gathering. He can use the network to find whatever he or the Ryodan needs. Having a hunter license helps him access information that only hunters can get as well. He’ll do whatever it takes to get whatever he needs even if it might involve some illegal activity.
Some simpler skills include extra human strength, with or without nen and increased speed.
Character Weaknesses: Without his nen, his fighting will definitely be limited. After all, he is a manipulation type which required the use of his cellphone to control the people around him. That meant, he, himself, did not have to do the fight. Strength alone is not enough even with nen so once he loses it, he'll have to figure out new ways to survive.
Although his intelligence might be the highest in the Ryodan, his strength is low. He ranks tenth out of all 13 members with only two women and a useless fighter below him. However, the 12th strongest could arm wrestle “evenly with a kid who lifts boulders for fun with her non-dominant hand”. Just comparatively to others, he is weak.
Shalnark sometimes has trouble getting a good grasp on the bigger pictures. He can get wrapped up in details and lose the significance of one main point.
Also, he’s pretty bad at card games! He and a few others played a game of BS, and he lost pretty badly. He This could be because of his open nature in which he isn't afraid to speak his mind when he wants to.

Why your character should be a Meister: Although he follows his boss and seems like a supportive character, it is only by choice. There are many times that he actually takes the lead in problematic situations and when he does, he does it well. He makes the plans, he sets the dates, and he expects people to follow him without question, and not surprisingly, they often do.
Even though he expects to be followed, he recognizes his need for support as well. He needs a weapon or device to attack because his strength alone isn't enough to accomplish whatever he needs to do. This makes it easy for him to accept the meister role that he'd inherit.

Third Person: Cracking his knuckles, Shalnark took the keyboard out of his lap and walked over to the fridge to get something cold to drink. Peering at the window, he realized that it was completely dark out! Before he had realized it, it was 2:37 AM. No wonder it was so quiet. Most people at this hour were asleep, right? Well, for Shal, it would be quite a while before he had that chance.
Since around noon, he had been scouring the network for whatever tidbits he could find, but there was nothing of interest that he could use. Sitting back down, he scrolled through the network once more, sipping the Cherry Scream Cola. If he couldn’t find anything, he’d call it quits. Some girl looking for a cat, a flirting couple speaking sweet, empty words, an old doctor with a bad leg…
"I've seen all of this already!" Shal cried out in frustration, pouting as he continued to search...hey. What was this? Shal leaned forward towards the screen, quickly scanning a filtered post that he finally unlocked. A smirk slowly crawled across his face. "Bingo. Danchou’s gonna love this…" He quickly took note of this information and erased his tracks quickly. His boss was going to be pleased with this!
If only Kurapika knew the troubles he was going to have thanks to this post...
