Episode reaction, under the cut.

I'm not sure why, but the opening bit of this episode through the 15 minute mark scared the pants off me. Good job, there. In fact, it set the bar a little too high. But it was much better than the episode last week, that's for sure.

I liked the young boy, and I also really liked Ever Carradine in the mom/possessee role. Good job on casting those roles. It's nice when the guests can bring it.

I'm really not digging the writing for Dean this season. I had high hopes after the first few episodes, but they've been dashed. While it was nice to see him being goofy and happy, it didn't feel right, because that was the sum of his character throughout the episode. Also, one of the things I've always liked about Dean was his relationship with kids. He's good at it, and Sam sucks at it. One of the reasons he's good at it, is because he doesn't lie to them. That whole "superhero" scene really bothered me, because it was character assassination, written solely because the writers couldn't figure out another way to get the kid pissed and the guys thrown up the wall. And of course, to get Sam to angst and emo about his role in the Apocalypse.

And is this the "new version" of the guy's relationship? Because it feels like a return to S1. I don't like it when Dean abrogates the responsibility for the hunt to Sam, and it's felt that way the past two episodes. And if Dean was whiny after talking about Hell for 5 minutes over two episodes, Sam has gone above and beyond. There hasn't been a single episode where he hasn't whined and pitched bitch-face over his role in the Apocalypse. Enough, already. If he has to do it, let's have him do it off-screen, ok? And how about stopping with the MOTW mirroring Sam's issues. We've seen that enough, and it brought down what should have been a really good episode. Give Sam something to do besides whine. Jared is *more* than capable of pulling it off, just as Jensen is more than capable of being something other than a walking, mumbling, brain-damaged caricature of a fratboy.

But still, much better than last week. And I think I would have liked it more if it hadn't been for last weeks episode. This week felt like a step backward, after all Sam's speechifying last week, about needing things to change, needing to grow up, blah-blah-blah. Going back to S1 just didn't seem right after that, no matter how cute some of their antics were.
