Episode reaction under the cut. No profound thoughs here...
Wow. That's two episodes in a row that I felt more positive toward, than negative. I didn't realize how much I missed Castiel, until he appeared last week. And this week, I liked Bobby again, which was a feeling I thought disappeared last year.
The scripts are still pretty lame and loose, and I'm not getting a sense of clear direction with regard to the writing, or this season's story arc. I feel that there's so much being thrown up against the wall, just to see what sticks. And that's a problem, because I've never felt that Supernatural was very good at juggling a whole bunch of stories at once. Maybe two - but not the half dozen or more we've gotten in the past four episodes. But the past two episodes were enough to keep me watching for another couple of weeks, anyway.
I loved the reappearance of Rufus, and I loved the whole "Grumpy Old Hunters" thing they had going on. Jim and Steven really seemed to be enjoying themselves, and that's always a joy to behold. Even when I haven't liked Bobby, I've always loved the way Jim portrays the character. If was nice to see another side of Bobby.
Jury's still out on Balthazar. He's kind of the Eurotrash bastard love child of Crowley and Trickster. He didn't really impress me, but I didn't hate him either. I find the thought of Heavenly WMDs much more interesting than Balthazar.
Loved Castiel, and I have no problem with his being less "human". I actually like him better as an Angel, so Yeah! I liked him getting all badass in Ep 3, although I found the earlier scenes of him being badass to be strange when contrasted to him being all helpless and inept against Raphael. That was just weird, because it was such a stark contrast. But I hope Castiel will be back soon. Love that little nerdy Angel.
The Campbells can all die as monster chow, as far as I'm concerned. Don't like a one of them, and I usually love Mitch Peleggi. This time around? Not so much.
I like Lisa and Ben, but I want them to be used sparingly. A little goes a long way. Next week's promo didn't thrill me, because I really don't want the manly man-angst of "Lisa and Ben in peril, and at Dean's hands!" thing I'm sure we'll get. Along with Sam's I-told-you-so's, of course.
Sam. What can I say about Sam? Jared looks even prettier this year than he did last year, but that shirtless scene went on too long, and actually made me uncomfortable. And Sam is behaving like a complete tool. But I'm sure that will be whitewashed by midseason.
I don't mind this newly mature, calmer Dean. I just don't like that it seems to be at the expense of BAMF Hunter Dean. There's no reason he can't dispense fatherly advice on the phone to Ben, and then turn around and kick major ass. We're four episodes into the season, and of those episodes, twice the bad guys got away, and twice the guys had incomplete victories. How about it, writers. Let's get back to the boys being proactive, kicking evil's ass and saving people. Instead of having them be hopelessly outclassed and reactive, give them their brains and cleverness back, make them capable again. And most of all, FIX THE BROTHERLY BOND. It's what got you to season 6 in the first place.
