okay, i think everyone can relate to this...i realise how truly sad it is when i get so excited when someone i didnt expect to add me on facebook does, or when someone i havent talked to in a long time messages me on msn...i totally agree with you on the it keeps everyone connected, but i definitely think it may also cause a steep decline in regular face to face social interaction...or just action in general

i love the internet, instant communication over any distance is something completely taken for granted. A few years ago, i had the weirdest conversation that went something like:

"hey, do you remember BEFORE the internet came out"
"ummm, no..."

It allows me to keep in touch with people i've met at various points in my life, Toronto, Oakville and Ottawa mostly, but then thoes people move to other places and i move to other places. So when i say "i know a guy there", the only reason i still might know him/her is the magic of the internet.

issues of 'Nettiquette' are usually to blame. some ppl think emoticons are lame, some ppl think OMGROFFLECOPTERRAWKS!!!1 is lame. also, look into "The Greater Internet Fuckwad" theory.
