Yes Eric, I whole-heartedly agree with a lot of what you're saying. Giving up things to God is an important part of the Christian walk. We give up many things that God doesn't want us to do (in sinful habits) and give up other things for spiritual edification (in an act such as a fast or something else). And true, there are benefits in giving up something like fast food. Whether they are spiritual or not is debatable, but there are definitely health reasons. But I honestly believe there are some things to worry about concerning what days we celebrate and in what ways. My real point here was that God does not command anyone to observe Lent. Lent is not necessary and there is nothing wrong with not participating in Lent. There may be something spiritual in some of the practices that Lent advocates, such as giving things up that aren't good for you, but the Spiritual edification doesn't come in the act of observing Lent because it's a holy event (because I don't believe it is).
