William Penn's first choice for a name was New Wales; the King didn't like that, because the Welsh at the time were even more of a nuisance than the Quakers. Penn's second choice was Sylvania.

Old Jersey is now a tax haven. To immigrate there (it's not part of the UK) ya gotta be loaded.

The flag of Maryland is the coat-of-arms of Lord Baltimore. You may find it goofy but it has the heraldic virtue that you'll never mistake it for another one, unlike the 22 state flags that consist of a blue sheet with something indistinct in the middle. - There's a funny story about the ship Queen Mary. Cunard said to King George V, "With permission I should like to name my new ship for one of England's greatest Queens" (probably meaning Elizabeth I).
