Background;
In the world of Alice 19th, in the distant past, a man named Lotsuan founded the society of the Lotis Masters, based on the twenty four words Lotis Words that can be used by those who believe in the trueness of the heart to fight darkness. Before he died Lotsuan passed his knowledge on to his disciples who went on to found sanctuaries around the world- In America, in England, Norway, China, and elsewhere. In true Christly fashion, however, one of his disciples betrayed him, creating the Maram words, that could be used to play on the darkness of peoples' hearts.
The Inner Heart;
Lotis Masters' most useful ability is their use of the phrase "Na Sadaru Lotis Ran" to enter a person's "Inner Heart". When they enter the Inner Heart they disappear from the "Real World" and re-appear in the person's Inner Heart with the Mirror of Lota on their chests, their bracelets with a stone for each Lotis Word, and nifty Lotis Master outfits. A person's Inner Heart can be just about anything in terms of appearence, but it usually reflects how they feel about themselves, or their situations. [Here are some canon instances: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, & 08] A person who feels trapped may reflect a room of cages, a person who feels cut off from the world may not be able to be located amidst an unmoving sea of blank faces. The person who's Inner Hear is entered is always present, however, they may be hard to locate or blatantly obvious, depending on their situation. For example, in a boys' Inner Heart who felt a girl should be paying him attention, he attacks and seeks that attention, but in the heart of a girl who feels lonely she will lock herself away and have to be sought by the Lotis Master.
The thing about the Inner Heart is you can purge the darkness from a person at its source. Any words spoken to a person in this place have that much more meaning, and if the Lotis Master is capable enough to tackle the mara and work with the person in their Inner Heart, they can overcome issues, phobias, resentments, and fears. By breaking through in the Inner Heart, they break through in the real world, though they only have dream-like, hazy memories of the Inner Heart, and of the Lotis Master inside. If examples once again make this better, Kyou used the Lotis Words on a classmate who disliked Alice and who propositioned him, then revealed his secrets to the entire school when rejected. The classmate acted out because she desired to be paid attention to and loved. When Kyou explained to her in her heart that she would surely find someone who would love her, but that he was sorry he could not be that person, she was comforted, though she could not remember quite why. Alice used words to comfort her mother in the Inner Heart, and put her mother's worries to ease.
The Dangers;
It's not a walk in the park, mind. Depending on how consumed by darkness a person is, the mara may be too strong for the Lotis Master to handle, or they may only be able to address certain anxieties or issues. Mara can take many forms, whether it be the black sludge seeking to pull a person under, a demon that possesses and allows someone to use Maram words, or a sickness that weakens a person. This darkness can be self-made, from a person' own twisted past or thoughts, or from another, from a curse or spell. If the Mara is strong enough, it can even turn on a Lotis Master and drag them in to the darkness. Either way, a Lotis Master has to employ skillful use of the Lotis Words to fight these manifestations of mara in order to commune with a person and aid them.
