Just finished self-reporting at the UBC website. God, do I love that system, seeing as all you have to do is type in your grades and they tell you whether you're accepted or not :D Apparently they calculated my average to a 90.5% (they take English 12 and three other top provincial courses) so I'm eligible for quite a few cool scholarships ♥ ( Read more... )

Man, this self-reporting website sounds awesome. *_* What about the essays and extra-curricular activities? Or are you automatically accepted as long as you meet the grade requirement?

Congrats on being eligible for several scholarships. ;D You know what happened with my college apps? First off, I joined "Link Crew," which is a leadership thing for the sole reason of putting it on my application later on. (Not that Link Crew wasn't fun. It just wasn't anything I'd join without getting something back in return. ^^;) And after all that, I FORGOT to include it on the form. *dumb*

Good luck with university apps, Chantelle! Those schools are lucky to get you! &hearts

Heh, as long as I have enough extracurricular hours on my sheet, I'm good. I don't even need to write an admissions essay - Canadian universities look pretty much only on your grades. The difference here is that almost everything else gets pushed off to the side, unless you have GREAT extracurriculars or something like that (e.g. student council). But then you end up needing really high grades just to get into universities that are only okay, not great. If your average is below - say, 80%, you probably can't get into any faculty at all.

And thanks so much! Ack about "Link Crew" - at least it was semi-enjoyable, though? And you still got into uni, so, it doesn't matter in the end ^^; I guess it really WAS the experience that counted.

Aww, thanks for the well-wishes too, Ann. ♥ I really appreciate them!

No essay? I love that! Hmm, I guess there are downsides to both because I wouldn't want them looking primarily at my grades. That doesn't say much about who I really am as a person, other than adaemically. But it's also good because students know that grades are the way to go. No worries because you KNOW you're going to be accepted. With extra curricular activities and the essays, no one is sure what the schools are looking for, so you don't have that safety guarantee. At least with this latter method, even if your grades are low, you're still considered and will maybe even be accepted. The self-report way is much less nerve-wrecking (and probably easier on the admissions. Less reading! XD), but I'm not sure which I prefer. (What about number of students? Has there ever been an overflow of students accepted to UBC?)

I actually WISH there were essays, because I'm good at those! But, oh well. Alot of outside scholarships do require you to write essays, though, so I'll probably end up writing a few anyways >___<; The Canadian system is really weird - up till this year, I thought we needed interviews/essays/tons of extracurriculars, but, it turns out we really don't.

I actually dislike the huge focus on grades. I think it's somehwat... over-the-top, shall we say? People from Vancovuer schools are pretty competitive, from my experience. It's always about the grades so very few people ever actaully care about learning anything >___<; But you're right in that it takes out so much the guesswork, I think ( ... )

YAY! Congrats. :D Are you applying to any colleges in the US?

Thanks! Nope, not applying to the US. Too much work! It's much harder for us overseas students to get into universities in the states - and plus, it's much more expensive since we get extra fees and pretty much no bursaries/scholarships if we're only mediocre students (like me). The only people over here who apply over there are the really ambitious kids, and they pretty much only go for ivy leagues because otherwise the Canadian universities are just as good.

I almost wish I applied to the states, though. I'm pretty sure my boyfriend is going there next year, so... *sigh* it'd make things a little easier. But then I'd be going for him, not me.
