Apologies if I'm trolling,but:
Have we discussed this old,but reverse sexist-ish article already? If not: http://www.cracked.com/article_16587_hollywoods-5-saddest-attempts-at-feminism.html

Hell, this author even cites a blog post from one blogger author who I believe was the one who accused Joss Whedon of being a rapist or something. Pardon my ( Read more... )

Where do you see the classism in the #1 entry? I'm not disagreeing, I'm asking.

Uh. The problem isn't them falling in love, it's them falling in love and completely giving up on their earlier badassery to be hausfraus. Why can't Eowyn be a wife AND a warrior? Why can't Elizabeth Swan be a wife AND a pirate? THAT is the problem. And no, I would argue that giving up on all their earlier passions isn't a choice. It's them dutifully doing what's expected of them as a walking uterus.

And where is the classism in #1? The whores ARE nameless. The chambermaid IS portrayed as a vapid, gossipy twit. And I'm not even touching the ~mystical sea goddess~ who talk like dis and use de voodoo.

Never mind that the third film features stereotypes of virtually every race easily stereotyped, with the notable exception of white people.

Incidentally, there was a pretty kick-ass woman in the series: Anamaria. She eventually became captain of a ship entirely on her own merits--but we never hear anything about her after the first film! She just disappears into the inter-sequel ether.

Eowyn happens to be one of my favorite literary characters so I may be biased here, but...

Wait, first I have to get this out of the way: SOMEONE WHO MAKES A "TEE HEE" LEGOLAS LOOKS LIKE A GIRL JOKE REALLY SHOULDN'T BE LECTURING ANYONE ELSE ABOUT THEIR SUPPOSED SEXISM, SHOULD SHE?

That done...Eowyn doesn't want to fight because she is in love with Aragorn. She very explicitly wants to fight for the same reasons that the men fight; when she complains to Eomer that it's unfair to deny Merry the chance to fight to save his friends, she is very obviously speaking her feelings about herself as well.

Faramir is a warrior with integrity; a man who fights not because he thinks it is a jolly good time but because he is standing up for what is right. While the film, for obvious reasons, speeds up their romance, it is a romance born of two people of similar ideological values finding each other at precisely the right moment, not a needy woman desperately latching onto "the first guy she sets eyes on".

WhatWhat River Tam? There's no need for you Ms.Author to claim River Tam or Kaylee or Zoe or Inara that their character's are poor bastions of feminism. I mean, Inara and River are special cases, but Zoe and Kaylee are both two different models of strong female characters.

Choosing River was sort of weak here too...River is, you know, crazy and though bad ass, not necessarily the best character to choose to be one's role model. Why not choose Kaylee who manages to be mechanically inclined, brilliant, and still very clearly feminine(also:sane). She is not a boy in a girl suit, but a girl with a variety of skills and interests.

I hadn't looked closely at the Elizabeth Swan section because I'm not terribly familiar with the character, having only seen one of the Pirates films and taking away from it mainly this: As much I love Orlando Bloom, it is not enough to overcome my intense dislike of Johnny Depp.

However, I decided to glance through it again and OH LOOK YET AGAIN ANOTHER CRACK ABOUT ORLANDO BLOOM NOT BEING MANLY ENOUGH.

Seriously? This writer fails on so many levels that I'm actually rather annoyed with myself for bothering to take her seriously when she clearly has no effing clue about which she speaks.
