"but... why not just use a mouse and keyboard?" "cause the gamepad was RIGHT. THERE. o.o"

So. I bought some USB game controllers for my PC while Helen was here, and because I was imminently bored I decided to map City of Villains to the gamepad and play it like a real console game. I tried mapping using CoV's normal functions but I wanted to use my right analog stick for mouselook and for the mouse, and while I could do the former, the ( Read more... )

We've been experimenting with our Xbox pad, the XBCD drivers, and Total Game Control, and we came to pretty much the same conclusion: keyboard and mouse sucks and is boring. Games are way better when you can play them on a pad and on the sofa on an HDTV.

However, for all our smug greatness, we still haven't got around to buying a replacement kettle. *mildly scalds self transferring hot water from pan to cafetierre*

What games have you been playing with controllers? CoV seemed like the obvious first choice (although playing my dominator would be a PITA on a gamepad) but I wanna try some others, just cause I'm bored.

Plus CoX does require some mouse input which isn't too great with an analog stick. "Oh shoot, I went over. ... Oh crap I went over again. AH GODDAMNIT!"

I still haven't figured out the whole mouse input on/off switch either.

So far it's mostly stuff that's easy to set up on a controller, like Half-Life, Fear, Outrun 2, and so on. Half-Life is particularly easy because it has a "joystick move" option that, mixed with TGC to nick one of the axes and dump it on the right stick, makes everything feel very natural. Rowan keeps saying she'll try it with WoW, but such things are a dream for now.

I find sofa-based WoW works better with a wireless keyboard and mouse, but then I'm scared of trying new things :p

Fear has pretty good pad support built in, but it still needs extensive tweaking in XBCD to get a good feel.
