What's more, three quarters of former guides believe that having access to female-only spaces helps young women become more successful as adults. ----- Well colour me suprised! Who'd have thought *that* would be the case. (thumps head on desk)
Well actually I was surprised! Both by the female-only spaces (why should this make a difference) and by the quite so high percentage of Brownie/Guides in those interviewed. Perhaps its being a doctor that you're familar with all the research around this?
I've tried to send you an email twice yesterday, but it didn't get through :-(
But I seem to remember you volunteering to be treebeard tonight so I guess that means you'll be there and we can catch up then!
My email address has failed because our IP server crashed. exactlyhalf is trying to fix it, but I'm not getting any lj notifications or emails. :( (withdrawal). We shall be there tonight - and hopefully tomorrow too!
I guess the female only spaces thing makes intuitive sense to me given the data on how single sex schools for girls lead to better academic performance. There is still (in most groups) so much social pressure on girls to fit certain moulds, and I think an escape from at least some of the sex-role definition is a good thing.
Pfft. It's not the skills - it's nepotism! The Old Girls Club :D
Which is still remarkably inefficient compared to the Old Boys Network...
I'm not surprised. We see similar sort of results with the young people joining in our youth group. The variety of activities lets them develop much much earlier. What's sad is that there is a serious shortage of group leaders round here. I think three of the local brownie groups are having to close/merge because they can't get volunteer leaders, although actual places in the groups are over-subscribed.
How's yours doing for numbers btw? You were worried about decreasing numbers, IIRC.
Actually my impression is that a lot of girls are slightly embarassed about the whole Guides thing?
Numbers ok at the moment as i've just had 3 new ones started, although one's very shy and clingy, so I'm not sure whether she'll be permanent.
As for leaders. Well, there's just me and one other. Unfortunately this other, let me know last Monday that she can't make this Monday - I wasn't impressed by the amount of notice. Normally she's really good, but it I'd already asked her twice whether there was anything she couldn't make this term. And whats she's going to is pre-arranged - a firework party at the nursing home she runs. Anyway *sighs* sorry for the rant - its not your fault!
