First off, TY
kromsays I now have a giant cock that's been to London on my refrigerator. :)
Since I'm doing this netflix thing, and I'm going to be watching a veritable smorgas bord of shows, I thought I might as well let you know what I think.
I mentioned that Avatar was cute. And it is. But it's also surprisingly deep.
The basic back story (containing minor spoilers most revealed in the first episode):
The world is broken up into 4 forces - earth, air, fire, water. And each of these forces has followers, or tribes... and within these tribes are magical people, or benders, that can control these forces. And over all of them is The Avatar, the one person that can control all four. The Avatar is an ancient spirit that is reincarnated into a new body every time the old one dies. Kind of like the Dhali Llama. And if the last Avatar was a fire bender, the next will be a water bender, and so on through all of the 4 elements.
And for centuries and aeons, all of the tribes got along well enough, until 100 years prior to the start of the series, when the Fire Tribe declared war on all the other tribes. The people cried for the Avatar to save them, but he vanished...
The basic storyline:
Two teenage siblings stumble across the one person who can save the world, but that person turns out to be nothing like what they expected.
Why I am really enjoying this series:
Produced by Nickelodeon, and presented in a light-hearted fun manner, this story has real meat to it. The desperation of the fight is very obvious throughout the series. The Fire nation has absolutely decimated all of the other tribes. Killed off almost all of the benders (or magic weilders) from all the other nations. To the point that our main female lead is told to keep her gift a secret.
And her brother is the lead fighter in the tribe. Only 14, and virtually untrained, he tries to be strong for the whole tribe, consisting of about 13 grandmothers, he and his sister and about 10 - 15 toddlers. There are no men left at all. None. They have all gone to fight the Fire Tribe... and all of the women were killed or taken during a raid.
The series keeps the situations fairly easy to understand, but doesn't hide the bad stuff. And it highlights the differences between the world 100 years ago and the present time in the series. The Avatar spends alot of his time reminding the characters that they *are* kids.
It's really well done and engaging. I reccommend it.
