Getting with the times

This week I did something I said I'd never, ever do: I caved and bought an e-reader; a Kindle, to be exact. I had been vehemently against them since they first came out; I love books, love them, and the thought of them becoming purely digital is heartbreaking to me. There is something very soothing about having a book in your hands, flipping ( Read more... )

Hmm, soulless is actually a really good way to put it, actually!

The book is Killer Germs: Microbes and Diseases That Threaten Humanity, by Barry and David Zimmerman. I've read about 1/3 of it so far, and it's really interesting.

And those are the reasons why I haven't gotten an e-reader. I'm still far too in love with my books at this point to buy one yet.

It still feels very different, and I find myself missing having a book in my hands, but I'm getting used to it!

I noticed a bunch of good books are free; one of the first ones I looked for was Alice In Wonderland, since it's my favorite book (I figured if I had a bunch of different physical editions, I might as well add a digital one too!), and it was free! I've also been looking through different eBook websites (Open Library is supposed to be good, but I haven't had a chance to really search yet).

I'm about to get a Kindle as well. I love, love, love my physical books, but since I'm doing reviews of publisher pre-releases now, I need something to read the galleys on. I hope I love my Kindle as much as others appear to :)

You will definitely love it! It takes a little time to get used to, but it's fabulous.

I was completely with you about e-readers, but then I got carpal tunnel. It's really hard to hold a book. So, I got my Kindle and you know what? It's awesome. But mostly I only have fanfic on mine; like piles and piles of it. I've actually only read a couple of books on there. :)

Iiiiinteresting; do you have to convert fanfic into a PDF, or something similar? Good Lord, if I could tote around my collection of fanfics, I'd be a happy, happy camper.

Yeah, you can convert them to PDFs, but I convert mine into .mobi files. I know there are several ways you can transfer the files, but I'm kind of a tech-pleeb so I go with the easiest route.

I copy and paste the stories into an ebook format at squeebook and then convert them at epub. I like the way the files look on the Kindle.
