Season Nine Week Nine: Keep Calm And End This Meme

SNOPES.COMRemember it. Learn it. Use it. Please. I see so many ridiculous urban legends being shared on Facebook and no one has verified if it's real or not. I often find myself looking them up on Snopes and then linking the OP to the Snopes article. I like to think that I am friends with intelligent people but when I see someone posting about ( Read more... )

Snopes is not the final answer either - I have seen incorrect info on there as well - verify it with multiple sources before you accept it as "fact."

However, I do not need to verify anywhere that I am totally unhappy with the change I find on my LJ this morning - I was gone for grad stuff and return to everything being "wrong" on my LJ!!!!!
FACT

Snope isn't the final answer, but it's a good start and I'd be happy if people even bothered to start there. My Facebook feed would make me feel much less snarky. LOL

I like the puppies and kitties too. My favorite lately has been texts from the dog. That is some funny stuff right there!

You make a good point. I've been on both sides of the fence re: snopes: the semi-obnoxious "actually, that's NOT true!!! *gloat*gloat*gloat*" person, AND the "agggghhhh! Look at THIS" person who gets met by the above from time to time. Plus, some of those snopes things are interesting in themselves!

They are interesting! Especially the 1/2 true ones because then you get more info on the parts that are true and they can be really surprising.

There tends to be a trend in these kinds of hysterical memes, if you've noticed. If it's not about safety in a world out to get you (toothpaste, Heartbleed, ATM), it's mostly about how government and political correctness is out to destroy real Christian (school, Pepsi) Americans who defend our country (Starbuck's and Motel 6) and want to be responsible for our own health (Obamacare). It makes me a little nuts, to be honest.

So much fear in this world.

There is a lot of fear out there! And so much of it is completely uncalled for but is just fear mongering with all of these memes and stories. It makes me kind of sad that people are so afraid all the time of even little day to day things like their toothpaste.
