Ivory isn't found anywhere except in elephants' tusks, so when they were "looking for resources like ivory", they were killing elephants. Some hog farmers used to let the huge shit wells overflow into the Tar River in eastern North Carolina. This sewage would go through cities like Greenville. Did the author list any environmental problems?
Civilization is still "grain based". Rome was pretty much a huge army. The Frankish invaders from the region in between what became France and Germany were probably the greatest reason why Rome fell, but the Franks forgot why they fought Rome and continued fighting, domesticating and passing on the gears of civilization. There was a hardcore band who went by the name, The Anazazi, and was composed of a member from the '93-4 hardcore-emo band, Mohinder, whom I didn't hear until ninety-seven. I've read that the Anazazi totally wiped out their animal food. They lived in what became southern California.
