Inspired by a dream, like all my best writing.
She wasn't sure how this building got here, to be honest. Why would someone build out here? These old, abandoned remains of what appeared to be a store, out here in the middle of an overgrown field. There wasn't even a trail connecting it to any sort of road. She had only seen it by accident and had her interest piqued enough to investigate.
She would've slid her hand across the walls if she weren't afraid of getting some nasty splinters. Despite it being a store, every shelf was empty, and despite it being abandoned there was no dust, no cobwebs. She pushed a well-oiled door open and entered the storeroom.
Empty, too, huh? Not even dust. It was well-lit from a glass-less window in the corner. She approached the window, to peek at the view it held. Just the surrounding field, of course-
"You know, wandering around abandoned buildings by yourself probably wasn't your best idea."
She spun around, surprised. Leaning on the doorway was a mirror image of herself. No- not a mirror image. She was taller, though not by much, and her hair was longer, about as unkempt as her own hair would be had she grown it out. She was wearing her jacket - that blue, two-sizes-too-big one, that she wore even on the hottest of days. Though, she wasn't wearing it today- that plus the long sleeves would make her arms itch.
"You-- you're--" she sputtered.
"Yeah, I'm you, after the short hair and the convention," she replied, calmly.
"The... convention?" she asked, her heart still beating fast.
"You always wanted to go to one, didn't you?"
"I... I... How did you.. How did you even get here?"
"Don't you find this building weird? Who's maintaining it? I mean, it's well lit, well taken care of, but completely deserted."
She closed her eyes, her whole body shaking. She didn't want to deal with this. Silently, she walked out of the dead-end storeroom, shoving her older self out of the way. She made a beeline for the exit of this goddamned building
"You really gotta work on those social skills," her doppleganger said as she walked away.
She turned the corner, watching the ground as she headed towards the way out, when her eyes stumbled upon a pair of feet clad in flipflops. She looked up as her heart painfully sank. Her.
Selena M. Galbreath glared at her with more disdain in her eyes than she had ever seen before. "You lied to me, you know," she said in that shrill voice she couldn't help but love.
"I didn't-" she replied, her voice usually quiet, unusually weak.
"You lied to me, Conor. I thought you were someone to look up to -- you were strong, you weren't afraid of what other people thought. But you lied to me. You're weak, you're afraid. I hate you." Selena's frown only deepened.
She's not the real- not the real Selena. Selena would never act like that. Selena was shy, talented but afraid. This was not her. This couldn't be her. This wasn't her, this wasn't her, this wasn't her this wasnt her why did it still hurt
"Sh- shut up," she mumbled
"Oh, is that the way to talk to your best friend? We were IRL Biffles, remember? I told you myself. We were going to live together as old ladies and keep fifty cats together. But you screwed that all up. You exposed your web of lies. It's all over."
"No, you're not..."
"I'm not what? Are you breaking down now that I've finally realized the truth? Finally feeling all the pain I felt when you fessed up?"
"You're not real, you're not her, you can't hurt me, you're not..." something
"What're you doing?"
anything
anything in this goddamned wreck of a building
"Are you gonna do something?"
no this place is empty, it has always been empty, no one has ever been here
"I dare you. Push me. Punch me. Cut me. You can't, though."
nothing here
"You can't because you still love me, don't you."
fuck
"It's kind of funny- oof!"
down the stairs she went
she followed her
"shut up"
"H-huh, I guess I under-under-"
"shut up, you're not real, you're not the selena i knew, you're not the selena i- i"
"I am, though. I'm how she really feels. She's been betrayed by you, she must hurt so much-"
"shut up shut up SHUT UP"
"Hah, wha- what're you gonna do with- with-"
"you're not real you didn't exist you never did you never will selena is back at her home safe and sound and you, you-"
Birds that did not exist previously scattered off in every direction, startled by a sudden cacophony of sounds
Conor O. Coderre, breathing hard from exertion, dropped what she was holding and headed immediately back towards the road, shivering.
