The Expanse season 3

I finally got around to watching this. Thoughts (with spoilers) behind cut.

Mostly, I thought it was wonderful - well up with the two previous seasons - though I do have to admit to a preference for the earlier part of the season, which was finishing off the season 2 story. Very satisfying to see Jules-Pierre Mao and the horrible Dr Strickland finally getting their just desserts. Not to mention Errinwright.

I did enjoy the second half of the season (the Abaddon's Gate half) very much too. I particularly liked the to and fro between Drummer and Ashford (stellar turn from David Strathairn), that Naomi was reconciled with the rest of the crew and that Bobbie joined the Rocinante.

What I didn't like so much, have to admit, was the character of Anna. I didn't mind her so much in the first part of the season (there had to be someone on Earth to help foil Errinwright), but her ubiquitousness after that got to me a bit - especially when Melba/Clarissa was on the point of murdering Naomi and Anna turns up and knocks her out. Hadn't it already been established that Anna had never left Earth before? How on earth was she able to follow Clarissa through the void to the Roci just like that? Do they have space-walking lessons in schools on Earth now?

Well, maybe they do, but I would have liked to have known that beforehand.

Also felt that for someone meant to be such a good person that even Amos goes all soppy over her, Anna didn't half talk about herself a lot.

That apart, I would also have liked an explanation as to where Clarissa's super-strength came from. Plus, I didn't find her last minute conversion to the side of good (as it were) that convincing, given how monumentally screwed up she was.

Also also, I got a bit irritated with Holden, who spent most of the last three episodes looking all weepy eyed, like someone kicked his puppy. But...I kind of find him irritating anyway.

Also also also, it wasn't very clear to me what exactly was happening at the end there. I had to read a summary of the final episode on Wikipedia to work out what exactly the Ring/Gate (the name seemed to be interchangeable) was doing.

But I enjoyed it, and I'm really glad Jeff Bezos enjoyed it too, because I would have been really sorry if season 3 had been the end of it.
