Haven't had any 'net time this week until today, so while I have the chance I just want to say a quick word about Star Trek Discovery season 2.
Spoilers behind cut.
I loved it, have to say. Out of all the Trek series, it's my favourite apart from the original (though parts of Deep Space Nine are okay).
I thought the inclusion of Captain Pike and Spock worked really well, and that Michael's relationship with Sarek and Amanda felt retrospectively earned, once her early dealings with Spock were better understood. Likewise, Dr Culber's return from the dead felt earned, the way such things rarely do, especially as him and Stamets getting back together took a lot of work on Culber's part.
I really enjoyed all the secondary characters - liked that Owosekun, Detmar and the others became real people, as it were. The show also did some clever work with Airiam, fleshing her out so well in the episode where she died that the grief of the others was very believable.
And the overarching plot was good too, with a really unpleasant villain and a great space battle in the final episode. Also, the explanation given for why in the original series, Spock never, ever mentions he has a sister and no one talks about the spore drive was well-handled, I thought.
That said, though the show did make a few serious mistakes in season 1, most of them were rectified in this one, IMO, which makes it even more of a pity (and it was already a pity, also IMO) that the makers of the show have bowed to fan bullying pressure and exiled Discovery to the far future for season 3. I guess they were always going to come full circle with Pike and Spock, but I wish it could have waited a while longer.
I know there's a petition out there calling for a spin-off series with Pike and Spock on the Enterprise, but it wouldn't be the same as far as I'm concerned, as having them remain - or at least still interact with - the crew of Discovery. And I'm sad also that the Ash Tyler character isn't returning (to my knowledge). I'd read that he was being spun-off, into a series about Section 31, which will star Michelle Yeoh as Captain/Emperor Georgiou, though I have no clue how that will even work. However, it seems Georgiou at least will feature in Discovery season 3 because she was on Discovery when it went through the wormhole, but Tyler wasn't, so that may be the last we see of him.
Oh well. We'll see, I guess.
