I don't think the idea behind daylight saving time was to have everyone wake up 30 minutes before daylight starts.

Actually, the point is to have as many daylight hours as possible during normal productivity hours, so starting the day at 7:30 is fairly reasonable. Although, of course, it really depends on where within the timezone you are. California is a big place...
