HAIR WOES.

Jun 18, 2006 00:17

Today, my mother and I spent about $85 on various shampoos, conditioners, and hair products. We don't go on these product binges often, but our surplus was empty, and since it's summer, we're even more prone to gigantic afro poofs. Sadly, we'll probably have to rebuy all this shit in a few weeks, too.
Having curly hair fucking sucks. I swear, ( Read more... )

The best curlyhair advice I've ever gotten:

*use a t-shirt instead of a towel on wet hair and squeeze water out rather than rubbing it dry

*don't use a hairbrush

*don't wash your hair too frequently (I wash mine once a week or so)

*use conditioner every day

*refrain from touching your hair as much as possible

This has really saved me from the frizzies, even on really humid days. *nods*

Hahahahaha. Very appropriate icon.

Thanks so much for the advice! Now why is a t-shirt better than a towel? Also, if I don't brush my hair at least twice a week, I will start getting dredlocks, and I'm really not trying to go for that hippie jew look.

Usually, I only shampoo about once every five days, but since it's summer and I've been sweating, I have to clean my hair much more often. I use disgusting amounts of conditioners and I leave them in my hair for at least ten minutes, but my hair's still so dry. I read in a book about curly hair that because curly hair is thicker, there are less follicles on the head, so less oil is produced to keep the hair not dry. So effing weak.

A t-shirt is better than a towel because the fibers are much finer and softer in a t-shirt and won't roughen the hair's cuticle and cause frizzies the way a towel does. After washing, you apply any product and finger-style the damp hair the way you usually do, then wrap your hair in a t-shirt instead of a towel for a few minutes. The t-shirt absorbs excess water and keeps the curl structures together without making them frizz. It works very well. The technique is called "plopping" (yeah, I know, they couldn't come up with a better name???) and can be found in detail here ( ... )

I second the no hairbrush as well -- use your fingers if possible, if not try a wide tooth comb.

I bet I do wish I had your curls, though. And I bet you wish you had flat straight hair, but no! No!

Anyway, I see from Fructus, or whatever it's called. I'd have to give that a thumbs down. I've tried it, and it dries out my hair, and if you already have poofy frizzy hair, I don't think you want it to get any more poofy and frizzy! I personally use Pantene, even though it essentially coats your hair in a plastic-like material. It works in my favour, since I try to rock the shiny-glossy-straight-yet-volumnous look. I generally succeed, except for the volumn part. I can manage straight and glossy, and wavy and volumnous, but not straight, glossy AND volumnous. Raaaaar.

It's always interesting that when it comes to hair we want what we don't have and don't like what we do have.

Awwww, cutie cat. How do they sleep like that?

Um, yeah, so I'm going to the signing today. In city #2. If ya see me, say hi :-) I'm wearing pink and will have a blue backpack.

Cuuuuuuute! *dies*

I have curly hair too. I use the prestigious "Suave" brand conditioner ($1.99 at Walgreen's) and a $2 bottle of hair gel (also from Walgreens). Try that, it seems to work.

Your kitty does the same stuff as mine.

I just had to chop off most of my hair. It sucks now.

Why'd you have to cut most of your hair off?

To remove all traces of a bad haircut. But I've discovered that, with the use of gel, I can turn a lame haircut into a ridiculous one.
