Interesting essay on why interstellar colonization will never happen from Charles Stross. Depressing if you've got the space empire is manifest destiny romantic streak, but worth the read: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2007/06
Actually, I quite liked the essay. Note that he wasn't saying that interstellar colonization will never happen, but -- extrapolating from current conditions and technology -- will not happen in the forseeable future.
Also note that what made me depressed was not the essay, but wading through the comments, which, in itself, was the best argument for why humans won't be able to put together a coherent, long-term (longer than a human life-span, let's say) plan for ANYTHING, or form a self-sustaining, stable community (one without constant outside stimulus, contact, and trade, both economic and social) -- both of which are necessary for most of the solutions which don't involve a lot of handwaving and darkMatterFTLGiantOpenEndedMassAcceleratorThatCouldAccelerateAPlanetTo.99cAndWeCouldBuildOneTomorrowWeHaveTheTechnologyItSaysSoOnWikipedia.
