history:
Reborn! Wiki, but since that isn't amazing:
The first thing we hears of Squalo's past is that he attended the same school as Dino - a school that had a lot of Mafia kids. He was famous in the school for being an unbelievably strong swordsman. At that time he was travelling the world, fighting swords-masters and absorbing their sword techniques. The Varia heard of him and scouted him, but he refused to join unless he was able to fight the then Varia Boss, and Sword Emperor, Tyr. After a two day long battle, Squalo emerged victorious. But he didn't become the boss of the Varia.
He devoted himself to Xanxus, who became the Varia boss instead, attracted to the fury born of his betrayal. He was so devoted to Xanxus and his cause that he made a vow not to cut his hair until 'that plan' was realised. Half a year later, they staged the coup d'etat, the Cradle Affair; a rebellion lead by Xanxus and the Varia to destroy the Ninth Vongola boss. Xanxus was 'frozen' following defeat by the Ninth, but this only allowed his hate and anger to build up for eight years. Squalo regrets that he could do nothing to save Xanxus in that fight. Following the battle, he researched into Xanxus's past, learning a deep secret of Xanxus's, something he only reveals much later on.
He came to Japan to steal the Half Vongola Rings from a boy named Basil. The fight took him to Namimori where he fought with Basil and finally defeated him. In the place where he defeated Basil, he also fought and defeated Yamamoto, Gokudera and Dying Will Tsuna. It was only when Dino, the head of the Cavallone family appeared that he managed to steal the rings and left. He returned the rings to Xanxus in Italy, who revealed they were fake sooner than the Vongola had hoped. The Varia then go to Japan, planning to destroy Tsuna's Family and take the rings back. However, when they confront Tsuna, CEDEF and Cervello interrupt. They announce that the Ninth had chosen Xanxus as his Successor but the head of CEDEF, Tsuna's father, had chosen Tsuna and as such the rights to be the next boss of the Vongola would be decided via rings battles.
Squalo was a spectator for 2 battles - Thunder (Lambo vs Levi A Than) and Storm (Gokudera vs Belphegor) - before his own against Yamamoto Takeshi. He was confident he would win because he had faced so many sword styles and could predict them. The battle took place in a tower which gradually filled with water, the Cervello warning that once the water level reached high enough, a shark would be released. At the start of the battle, Squalo got incredibly annoyed that Yamamoto wouldn't attack and would only defend against his attacks, successfully taunting Yamamoto into attacking. But he predicted Yamamoto's attacks and continually dodged or blocked them because, as he reveals, he had defeated the Shigure Souen style before. What he didn't predict was Yamamoto using a different eighth technique than the one he had faced, or Yamamoto adding a new ninth technique. He was defeated. Yamamoto tried to save him from the shark, but Squalo refused the help, saying Yamamoto was tainting his honour as a swordsman; he kicked Yamamoto away and was apparently devoured by the shark.
In the Sky Battle is was revealed that Squalo was still alive, saved by precautions Dino had put in place to save the loser of the Rain battle, thinking it was going to be Yamamoto that lost. Squalo had sustained serious injuries and had to undergo major surgery in order to survive. But that didn't stop Dino from bringing the bandaged and wheelchair bound Swordsman to the Sky Battle to force information from him at gunpoint. Squalo reveals it was Xanxus's fury that inspired him to follow him, and when Xanxus's hands are frozen by Tsuna, he refuses to reveal more about the Cradle Affair than what had already been revealed. Xanxus is then frozen entirely by Tsuna, and Squalo regrets not being able to do anything to save Xanxus again. But the flames from the complete Vongola rings are used by Mammon to melt the Zero Point Breakthrough's ice, and Xanxus is given all the rings in order to complete the Succession ritual. However, the rings reject him because he has no Vongola blood. Squalo then reveals everything he knows about Xanxus's childhood and past prior to Squalo meeting him.
With the Varia's loss, they presumably return to Italy to regroup, though Squalo tells Dino that even after that battle, Xanxus would not give up the fight to claim his place as the 10th Vongola boss and that eventually they would face Tsuna and his Guardians again.
The next time Squalo is seen, it is during the Future arc. It is revealed that he went on to fight 101 swordsmen to secure his title as the Second Sword Emperor, and filmed the battles in order to send them to Yamamoto, who at the time was aiming for the major league in baseball, to coax him back into sword-fighting and away from Baseball once and for all. These videos were given to the younger Yamamoto to help him train for the attack on the Melone Base. Squalo is in command of the Varia assault a Millefiori base of operations in Italy. They secured the castle at the centre of the base with ease but were then surrounded by Millefiori troops. He sends Bel and Fran (the newest member) to patrol part of the area surrounding the castle while he patrols another, leaving Levi and Lussuria to guard the castle. He encounters some lower ranked Varia members who were tasked with taking care of Xanxus and who had been punished for not bringing him the right kind of meat. Squalo is in the middle of raging over Xanxus's awkward attitude when they are attacked by enemies who Squalo easily defeats with his box weapon.
The Varia then face off against one of the fake Funeral Wreaths, who Xanxus defeats. Following the fight, Byakuran reveals the plans for 'Choice' to both the Vongola and the Varia. Squalo travels to Japan in order to properly train Yamamoto (and bring a gift of tuna to Dino, for whatever reason) after hearing that he lost to Genkishi.
Squalo is also present during Choice as a stow-away in the base Shoichi constructed. He spectates and commentates throughout the battle, but mostly he is interested in the rematch between Yamamoto and Genkishi, which he is confident Yamamoto would win after his training. In a flashback, he is shown sitting at a camp-fire with Yamamoto during their training, telling him that if he truly wants to become strong with the sword, he has to devote himself to it. Following the Vongola's and the argument over the request for a rematch, Squalo steps in to defend Yuni from attack by Kikyo and Zakuro alongside Dino. This allows Tsuna and co. to retreat back to the teleportation device to escape from the choice grounds back to Namimori.
Back at the Vongola base, Squalo makes use of the communication room to contact the Varia for back-up for the upcoming fight against Byakuran and his Real Funeral Wreaths, but the Varia are busy in a clean-up operation following the battle against Millefiori forces back in Italy. The transmission is cut off when the base is attacked by Zakuro, who Squalo opts to fight in favour of letting the Vongola and Yuni escape again.
The last time Squalo is seen is when he contacts the others to tell them to escape quickly. He is badly battered, his Rain Shark defeated and his left arm cut off. The base then explodes and Squalo is assumed dead.
personality: Superbi Squalo. His name (Superbi) translates as 'pride' and pride is certainly something he is no stranger to; in fact it is his defining trait.
Squalo's pride is largely illustrated as a swordsman. It dictated that he cut off his own left hand in order to fight the previous Sword Emperor, Tyr, who himself only had one arm, to understand and better appreciate the man that he finally defeated after a two day long battle. It drove him to travel the world, fighting 100 more swordsmen in order to secure the title he had won and gain the respect he deserved. He even filmed all 101 battles, though the final he didn't count as legitimate because his opponent, Genkishi wasn't putting any effort into the battle. These videos are later sent to Yamamoto to coax him into focusing on swordsmanship and not baseball.
But his pride also means that he often looks down on pretty much anyone else. Like Xanxus, he has a habit of calling people Trash and Scum or 'brats' in the case of Tsuna and his Family. Though, when he does find a worthy opponent, he will begrudgingly give them some credit and respect.
Still, his pride as a swordsman is such that in the ring battle against Yamamoto, he shows that he would rather die with pride and honour intact than face the prospect of being rescued and be shamed.
Despite his enormous pride, Squalo was willing to give over the position of Varia Boss to Xanxus. Strangely, his devotion to Xanxus apparently knows no bounds. Not only did he relinquish leadership of the Varia to him, he also swore to risk his life and remain by his side - he even made a vow to not cut his hair until Xanxus had taken his place as the Tenth Vongola Boss from Sawada Tsunayoshi. This is a vow he still sticks to, even at age 32.
It could probably be said, in regards to his relationship with his boss, that Squalo is a bit of a masochist. Despite the abuse he receives from Xanxus (everything from having glasses and rocks tossed at his head to being ordered around and even being laughed at when he 'died'), Squalo remains fiercely loyal to the man, and has even shown that he will keep Xanxus's deepest secrets, even under threat of injury and death. Xanxus is clearly the only person that Squalo would do anything for, pride be damned.
Violence is something Squalo is not naive to. Not only is a member of the Vongola's elite independent assassination squad, he has replaced his left hand with a mechanical hand to which a sword is attached. Violence and fighting is a continuous part of his life, and one he clearly relishes, though it is more likely the ability to continually display and better his sword skills that drives him here. Squalo even has no qualms in cutting down children and was fully prepared to kill during the ring battles when he was so confident in winning the Rain battle.
Squalo is an incredibly impatient individual. He clearly hates the way in which his boss waits things out, or how slow he takes battles. Squalo would much rather get to the goal as fast as possible, no matter how many need to be injured or killed to get there. He does not generally enjoy long drawn out battles that could be won in moments, and as such does not toy with his enemies.
He is also, some may say, insufferably loud. When his rather short temper is flared (often because of something Xanxus has done), he has a tendency to yell at people, and shouts 'Voi' to vent his frustrations.
But Squalo isn't all bad. He has a number of redeeming sides of his personality that make him at least a little more of a bearable, balanced individual.
As second in command of the Varia, Squalo is often giving orders to the other members of the squad. He is a relatively sound tactician and is able to plan deftly around an ever changing battlefield. His impatience apparently does not often get in the way in this facet of his occupation, and it has been shown that other members of the Varia do look up to him and respect his position.
It is apparent that Squalo has some pride in Yamamoto and has accepted him as somewhat of a long term pupil. In the future arc, once he learns that Yamamoto was beaten by Genkishi, he is enraged and travels all the way to Japan in order to both punish and properly train the boy. He tries incredibly hard to persuade Yamamoto to devote himself to the sword in order to reach his full potential as a swordsman. It is likely that he is grooming Yamamoto to be the successor to the title of Sword Emperor, and so he is trying to beat the childish behaviour out of him.
Squalo is also not beyond putting the differences between the Varia and the 10th Vongola family aside in order to fight for the sake of the Vongola. On more than one occasion, he saves or helps Tsuna and his family, at one point even fighting one of the Real Funeral Wreaths - and being badly defeated - in order to allow them to escape safely with Yuni.
Finally, Squalo has a couple of odd quirks. It has been stated that his favourite hobby is sword maintenance and that his favourite animals are sharks (not surprising, given that Squalo is Italian for shark).
abilities/powers: Squalo has an artificial left hand, to which is attached a sword, his weapon of choice. He has developed his own style of sword fighting, which he began to develop while travelling the east, fighting swordsmen and absorbing their styles, and completed when he defeated the previous Sword Emperor.
|Attacco di Squalo - a shockwave attack which turns a powerful blow into an oscillating wave that stuns the opponent's muscles, causing temporary paralysis.
|Zanna di Squalo - a series of forward sword thrusts.
|Scontro di Squalo - Squalo's special technique, in which he charges forward, slicing diagonally in front of him as he does so. This technique is powerful enough to tear away water in front of him.
Squalo can also employ rain flames, which can be used to weaken a target by robbing its strength and capacity of movement. He can also use the rain flames in conjunction with his box weapon, his Squalo Grande Pioggia, Alo.
|Alo - is a shark box weapon, which coats it's body in rain flames. It can cause damage simply by brushing against an opponent and the rain flames can dull the pain from it's bite, making a target unaware that they have been injured. Alo is powerful enough to defeat multiple enemies with Squalo's prompting. It's attacks are: Biting, Lacerating, Devouring, Head Butt, Squalo Rotante and Lima di Squalo.
However. Squalo will be arriving without his sword arm, as during the fight with Zakuro, his arm was lost.
first person sample: {The feed comes on and Squalo wastes no time in screaming at the top of his lungs.} VOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!! What the fuck is this place and where the fuck are my clothes?!
{A few moments of silence as he realises his surroundings and--} WHAT THE HELL?! No way am I fucking dead! That scum had nothing on me!! This is a damn joke!!
third person sample: Squalo watched out of the corner of his eye as the brats finally made their escape, running as fast as their short-ass legs would carry them, never once releasing the stream of rain flames to combat the onslaught of storm flames from his enemy. He shouldn't have had to convince them, but stupid brats would always be stupid brats. Once he watched the last of them vanish around the corner, he turned back to Zakuro, a shark-like grin tugging at his lips.
Behind him, Alo thrashed around wildly in the air, echoing Squalo's own desire to get the fight started for real. He hadn't been able to properly let loose in a while; he'd been training Yamamoto and even during the choice battle he hadn't been able to fight. This was his first chance since the siege on the Italian Millefiori forces, and it sent a thrill through him.
And then in a blink, the battle began. Squalo surged forward, slashing wildly with his sword - Zanna di Squalo - but every attack was blocked with terrifying ease. Falling back, he allowed Alo to take initiative and there was clash of storm and rain flames as the shark attempted to charge and bite at Zakuro.
"Vooiii... stop blocking and start attacking." Squalo didn't even think for a second that he would regret those words, yet moments later he was on his knees with Alo severely injured and on the ground behind him, and his torn off arm in front of him. He hadn't even seen the attack coming, wasn't even sure what exactly had happened, but the base was beginning to fall apart around him and it just made the anger boil up inside of him. Gritting his teeth, he sent a message to the brats, telling to make sure to get as far away as possible - it was obvious to him, no matter how confident in his skills he was, that this fight wasn't going to last long again.
With a growl and a glare in Zakuro's direction, he attacked again...
