this is pretty interesting: last night i was watching some news station with my friend who is russian, and there was this guy who just got sentenced to 60 days in prison (with probably community service) for driving DUI and subsequently killling a child. i don't think it was a hit and run as they showed cops arresting him on the spot. my friend was ( Read more... )

I agree about the recklessness (note that I mentioned that). And while I said 60 days IN JAIL is enough, I also added other punishments that should be enforced that will (hopefully) be better able to change these men's view on drunk driving or allowing a teen to drive. What I'm saying is that the punishment should not just be for punishment (which 60 days in jail is fine) but also for education and rehabilitation purposes (hence the other programs I mentioned). While some may not feel guilt, I hardly think this is the norm. We cannot punish the many too harshly because a handful of people will continue to disregard the law. My point is that we all make mistakes. If this was these men's first offense, then years in jail is just too harsh.

alright end of this, we all agree on the need for rehabilitation and that the correction system is overall just bad. although, this brings up a really interesting point: is it that ukraine has a different way of thinking or just that their rehabilitation system is just jail? i would hope for the former because i'm curious about how other countries deal with it and the effectiveness of their methods
