Why wouldn't it be possible for a single neuron to do that? I think anything is possible. I mean if a single screwed up chromosome can totally affect how a child comes out, then why not the possibility that a single neuron can carry great responsibility all by itself?

Best science article I've seen lately is this guy who got his arms fried off in a power line accident now has prosthetic arms and hands. Nothing new there.
But the neat trick is they took what was left of the nerves that formerly serviced his hands' sensations, and rerouted them to lay just below the skin on part of his chest.
The prosthetic hands are wired to transmit pulses over an electrical wire to a device on his chest which then stimulates the nerves on his chest. When his prosthetic hand feels pressure or temperature, the nerve in his chest which used to be in his arm gets stimulated and his brain interprets it as sensation coming from the hand! He said it was just mind-blowing the first time it worked...
also interesting: i read an article from my alumni magazine a few months back - there is a guy who is completely paralyzed but they implanted a tiny chip into his brain and hooked it up to a computer and now he can move around a cursor, check email, and play video games, just by thinking about them http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/10/20/explorers.braingate/
