It was as if life stood still the moment I sat on the bench. Everything was in slow motion. Birds flew by, their wings were spread apart and landed meters in front of me. I watched them for a while, my mind attentive yet aloof. It had always been like this, since the first time I took my rightful spot on this peculiar neon bench. Life seemed to be full of lies, full of fake advertisements. I wanted to get away from all.

In front of me was a huge billboard sign that showed young adolescences to ‘wear this’ or ‘be that’. Don’t they care about other important issues in this crevice world? There are homeless people on the street, seeking their food and other necessities and living in a day of survival. Don’t even get me started with the children in Africa…

Busy business people walked hurriedly before my eyes, some looked meek, some had gaunt figures and most had confident postures. None of them flickered an eyelash in my direction. None of them cracked a smile. None of them offered any kindness. None of them cared.

The pigeons in front of me leaped away, spread their wings and flew to a more sustainable location, which was across the lake where a class of third graders on a field trip threw bread crumbs to the winged creatures of the lake. My stomach growled.

I was tempted to fly with the birds to a food source, my stomach wanted to; my mind however, did not. My mind had class, maybe a hint of pride, even if it meant starvation.

I stood up from my seat on the bench. I straightened my dirty, dishevelled clothes. I glanced at my left side before I walked towards the right. I had no where to go. This was the cost of getting away from the life full of deceit and the venal world. It got me nowhere, yet I’ve accomplished my goal. I was no longer part of that wretched, materialistic world. Unfortunately for me, I’ve risked so much and received so little. I have a new problem to face, surviving day to day.
