Facebook

A work colleague was recommending I join facebook the other day. Is anyone a member there? I just wondered if there are any security issues relating to it which I should be aware of before I decide if I'm going to join it or not.

I quite like facebook as an online way on contacting and interacting with RL friends and family withough them poking at my online life. I've heard people describe it as hiding in plain sight.

Apart from the obvious issues about having your real name and details about you online, something that I wish people had told me first is that it's a bit like Hotel California - you can never leave. If you cancel your account for any reason Facebook keep their records of you "in case you want to come back". Worth knowing, I think.

I was thinking that if you put things like your date of birth online, linked to your real name it would enable fraudsters to clone you and stuff. It doesn't seem to want to allow you to join without it putting it in. I suppose if you can hide it somehow that might be okay.

I can't say I've come across the Hotel California reference before. The only thing that seems similar is the "Welcome to Royston Vasey, you'll never leave" sign in the League of Gentlemen. I suppose the idea is to put as little information in as possible. Thanks for your input.

I am.

I have my profile on there set so only friends can see it.

I find the interface confusing and hard to use at times I have to admit. .

I was a little concerned about putting my real name in and linking it with my date of birth, since they use it for security and someone could try and clone you. I suppose if the date of birth is hidden and you choose who can see it then it should be okay.
