I happens with the old megadrive cartridges after a while, about a year ago I was absoloutely gutted to have lost all of my Phantasy Star 2 saves, inclusing my dads one which he never managed to finish.

Oh wait, I just remembered something. I could be wrong, but I think some game cartridges have a small battery (one of those flat circular ones) inside which maintained the memory while it wasn't on. Then eventually it degrades, and when it loses power, the memory (i.e. saved games) is lost.

But yeah, damn shame you can't back up stuff like that...
