Am I the only one who thinks there is a serious lack of singers who have taken any taken a serious amount of voice training these days? For example, I'm watching Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show and he has music guest star Adele... okay, she's got the big booming voice with the smooth jazz sound, except she can't transition and she tries too ( Read more... )

Ever heard Celine Dion sing off the cuff when she hasn't warmed up? It's pretty atrocious.

My theory: there are 2 kinds of singers. 1 kind want to be an opera/musical theatre/lounge singer, so they take lessons, join choirs, go to music school and then compete with the other type-1-singers to get the few paying jobs which exist in their field.
The other kind get a band together in high school, release an EP, get noticed by the right person and become an instant star by recording a song by an established songwriter and then doing a hot music video. After that, the guys who run the show care about what they wear more than how well they sing, since studio recordings can work magic with a cracked voice and concerts are more about the stage presence than the music.

Folk singers tend to fall somewhere in the middle of the two groups, but other than that I think you are right for the majority of cases.... *le sigh*

There are far to many people (singers and audience) who think that vocal histrionics are superior to control. They should all be forced to listen to Nat "King" Cole. That man had control. No matter what he did, it sounded like he wasn't even trying. Anyone dumb enough to attempt doing one of his numbers at karaoke quickly finds out otherwise. Today it's all about the flash.
