to kindle or not to kindle...

Who has one? What kind? What size? How much did you pay? What is the verdict? I like the idea of the full notebook sized one, but the price difference between that and the 6" is extreme. Also, it would be nice to have one that fit in a handbag. But I'm wondering how annoying the teeny little screen would be. Does anyone know about buying ( Read more... )

fucking lj sucks eating comments. Let me recap:

you can upload fanfic to word and convert it and read it on your kindle. this is very awesome so you don't waste paper.

It's just like reading a book - weighs less, same size as a paperback and now 50% cheaper than when I got my kindle. Go figure. You don't actually notice you are reading from a device, your brain switches off which is important.

The regular sized one is fine, you don't need all the bells and whistles, just the basic one which is $139 I think.

I would be very upset if something happened to mine *covets kindle* I'm bringing mine to Ycon so you can look at it then if you like.

You can get thousands of books, including free ones, for the kindle and Amazon is working to get the entire catalogue changed to kindle format, so you can't go wrong. And it's instant satisfaction: you want? you browse, you get the book 30 seconds later ;)

I'm not sure if it will save you any money (it depends on how many books you buy), but the e-book is definitely cheaper than the paperback. I've got the original one from when they just started coming out, and I have to say, it's rather lovely. It fits into your purse easier in any event and sort of makes you feel like Captain Janeway. The size of the screen isn't much of an issue because you can toy with the font size and get it to where you need it.

And as long as you convert things into PDF files, you can read it on there. I'm not sure about manga.

Barnes and Noble also offers something called the Nook, which is pretty neat and more affordable than the Kindle. My roommate works there, so if you would like, I can ask her some details about that as well. :)

I would love to own a Kindle or a Nook, but alas, I can't afford one! I played with my friend's and I thought it was pretty awesome. And no, I don't think it'll be the death of books, given there are people like us who don't mind having to use ten different shelves just to house them all. ;)

♥ Less than a month! And we'll have our room money to you as soon as possible. Jimmie and I ran into some financial snags, but we're working through them! Can't wait to see you guys again! :D

Seconded on the NOOK. I can't really give you the specs on why it's better than the Kindle (it just is! and you get a touch screen! and it has sudoku!) because the sister's the one who did all the research on e-readers and I just coat-tailed along after all her hard work, but I got a NOOK recently for my birthday/going away present and I love it.

And I adore real, paper books and prefer (owning) them when possible, so it's not about replacing the written word, it's more for convenience's sake. It's less bulky than a real book, you don't have to worry about wearing your books out or accidentally ruining them with travel, and you can get classics which are 75+ years old and now in the public domain for free. :D

Hmm, I don't know how manga would work on the smaller Kindle since the screen is so teensy. I don't think they'd downsize the images, but they might.

The smaller one's probably fine. I read really, really fast, through, so the smaller one's screen is just waaaaaaaay too small for me. I ponied up for the bigger one. IT IS MY PRECIOUS.
