The Righteous Indignation of the FanFic Writer

Jul 17, 2011 10:23

Someone replied to a very old story of mine and informed me that the LotR line (cribbed from the book's narrative and given to Grima to deliver to Eowyn in the film) was not "a hutch to trammel some wild thing in" but "a hunched tremmelsome wild thing ( Read more... )

Pffft. Reminds me of the Jeep vs Hakuryuu mini-debate that popped up in the anonkinkmeme. I just facepalmed through it.

*hugs* Hope you feel better soon.

Also, I googled 'tremmelsome' and the 2nd thing to pop up is this entry. Just a random fyi. XD

Its not much, I was waiting to see if it'd blow up into something bigger, but alas, wonderful mod nipped it in the bud.
Still, rather amusing, I think.

turning a classic like LotR into crap with just one fanfic is kind of an epic achievement

Indeed! Well then, I guess you should have felt honored? *laughs*

Aw, honey, fuck them all. :D

That one is just hilarious. Because honestly, that fic has a bunch of good comments there and on Open Scrolls and has been favorited many times (the only reason I saw these comments is because someone favorited the fic today and I decided to follow the link to remind myself which story it was). This guy was a Tolkien fan who is going to be deeply offended by 99% of everything he finds on FF or Open Scrolls anyway. So that one just amuses me. It is the comment of wrong wrongness, implicating that it was I in the wrong that has my knickers in a savage twist.

Also, I should be writing and so have fixated on a two year old post (which I only now discovered) in a subconscious effort to find a way to procrastinate.

That's all I can say. Other than, some people really need to learn to think before they speak/comment on fic. Honestly. Don't let it bother you!

It's like that cartoon where the guy is like "I can't talk right now, hon. Someone on the internet is WRONG!!" I just want people who say I am wrong when I am right to KNOW beyond a shadow of doubt that they are the ones who are wrong and to wholeheartedly acknowledge that wrongness (and my superiority in all things Tolkien). Unfortunately, it is a hopeless dream. Ya know?

*hugs back*

Someone is putting you on.

"A hutch to trammel some wild thing in ..." is perfect English. The other phrase is gobbledygook.

And your soul is neither hunched nor tremmelsome.

Here is the direct quote, from "Houses of the Healing" in Return of the King:

Gandalf: "Think you the Wormtongue had poison only for Théoden's ears? Dotard! What is the house of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll on the floor among their dogs? Have you not heard those words before? Saruman spoke them, the teacher of Wormtongue. Though I do not doubt that Wormtongue at home wrapped their meaning in terms more cunning. My lord, if your sister's love for you, and her will still bent to her duty, had not restrained, you might have heard even such things as these escape them. But who knows what she spoke to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all life seemed shrinking, and the walls of her bower closing in about her, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in?"

So, there you go: a direct quote from Tolkein. I have the original Houghton Mifflin print version, too.

*victory dances around the apartment as the walls of my bower close in about me*

Thank you!!!

Now. Everyone on my flist should go to ff.net and spam that person (who actually left the comment in 2009, but I only just noticed it today) and tell her she is stoopid. Yeah. Except no one should actually read the fic, because it was one of the first things I wrote and kinda sucks (not enough to turn the entire Tolkien oeuvre into excrement, but still not great; mind you, it has a small but dedicated following).
