Awww!

The cat in my icon nursed on her mother after she was weaned. Mom kicked her, but it didn't deter her.

when I had the kittens I was highly amused that they sometimes tried to nurse off of Hex (who was a neutered male!) Poor old man, he was such a good stepdaddy to those babies, he herded them about and kept them out of trouble. I was heartbroken when he up and disappeared on me :(

oh Hexadigit Mischief was an old old boy. (he was a black polydactyl that was half himalayan, so HUGE cat! Like having a panther cub in the house.) I think he was almost 18. You may know how cats seem just fine in old age and then suddenly they get kind of fragile....not sickly, just not real solid...he had started to get that way a bit. One morning I got up and went to feed everyone and he didn't show up, and that was not like him. I turned this house upside down (literally, I moved the fridge for fear he had gotten behind it somehow oh fuck that was not fun.) I'm thinking he realized he was getting ready to pass on and he slipped out the door when I was bringing in groceries the night before. He had seen me mourn and love over cats who were passing away at home before and I just think he didn't want to upset me. (i know, I know, ascribing human tendancies to animals, but damnit, they are a lot smarter than people think!) Sweet boy didn't realize not knowing what happened to him is more upsetting to me than if I'd sat vigil over him ( ... )

Your theory isn't wrong. Usually when left to their own devices, old or sick cats will go away and find a private isolated place to pass on. I read that in a book on cat behavior. It didn't say why, but your theory is as good as any. For that reason I kept a super close eye on Nina when she got old and wouldn't let her anywhere near outside (easier for me than for you as the only access she had to Outside was through me). As you said, the thought of not knowing (and not having a little body to bury or cremate) would be too much to take. *hugs you hard* He was thinking of you, poor misguided little soul...

Suki chirps too!!
