Thoughts on Eroticism and Fic

etirabys gave me a really awesome compliment yesterday and said that I am delicate with the little touches - and it started me thinking about my approach to fic and the erotic in general ( Read more... )

One of the compliments shinychimera and I frequently get on our NC-17 stuff is that the sex shows something about the characters. And that's true, and important to both of us, and why, I think, we never really write PWP. Even something like "The Doctor and the Impatient" which looks liks straightforward smut, has that moment in it when Jim admits that he's afraid the relationship is unbalanced, that he's the one that loves more, that he's the one who's vulnerable.

So, yeah. What was I saying?

Sex that reveals character is always a good thing.

(glances at open tab of 3,200 words of filthy PWP)

(looks back at your entry)

(gives up and goes to eat dinner while thinking of something poetic to write)

Your writing does have a really lovely quality to it, though -- if I wasn't so burned out from studying I'd be able to qualify it better, but my best approximation is "dreamy," but without the haziness or confusion.

You know that pwp is extremely relevant to my interests! I wish I could write that kind of thing because HOT. Pwp is such a misnomer - good pwp is a sexy fucking character study.

THERE IS NO CHARACTER STUDY IN THIS FIC THERE IS JUST FUCKING IT IS ENTIRELY STRESS-RELIEF AND NOTHING ELSE

Also everyone kind of hounded me and so I wrote in an element that is hugely embarrassing to write but everyone seemed to want it soooooo.

My body is ready for this fic.

Also, I don't think you can write something that doesn't reveal character. So.

This is a really interesting and insightful look into your writing process and why you write. Thanks for posting it. :)

I don't really have any kind of profound response, just that your fic is awesome and you are awesome.

The why and how of writing is so interesting! Sometimes I get a little self-indulgent and have to write about it. *grin*

Thank you. I've had so much fun writing fic, especially some of the stuff I have going on lately, and I really do think it's a great playground for writers to practice.

professor suggested my next fic start with everyone's pants already being off - because I was complaining that no one was taking off their pants. *laugh* I'm going to do that, because otherwise it's like I'm never going to produce anything short AND explicit.

Negotiation and communication - at every stage of the game. Because it's awesome and sexy to communicate with your partner about the things you want. You know what it is? I think of it as a profoundly sex-positive thing to talk about sex with one's partner.

And, honestly, I think you don't give yourself enough credit. I was totally invested in battered soldier Erik before he even made it to the Snow Queen's kingdom - I wanted to see what happened to him. You pack a lot of character in very quickly.

I read a lot of sketch. Like, a LOT of sketch. I think if it's got a dub/non-con warning there I'll probably read it no matter what the premise. Sketch tends to be explicit by nature I guess, and that's about the only five-thousand word sex scene I'll be willing to read, otherwise my eyes just start to glaze. Probably that's about all I read at this point - I guess it's not really about character then but then again if it's written well, sure it is.

I also really enjoy the slow build that other people manage to accomplish, although my breaking point is generally about 15k and then I just, have no patience anymore (no matter how great the story might be.)

I like really long stories - but I also read really fast. I plow through 40k stories when I can't sleep at night - a hour or two of reading and then I'm ready to go back to bed. So my energy and time investment levels are pretty low.

Sketch is almost always interesting to me - though I have a hard time with physically violent sketch that is noncon. Violent dubcon is, for some reason, easier. I don't know. I like my noncon psychological and situational and guaranteed to leave trauma.

I guess I just have a lot of patience for sexually charged situations, though I really do want them to pay off with explicit sex. Like, a 50k gen fic probably won't get a click from me unless I have other impetus - like I know the author or something. Or it's the total word count of a series of stories. Like, I don't know how many words the Daycare Verse has at this point but I've read all of that in small chunks.
