The gentleman I bought my Red from lives in Marina (near Monterey) and he works as a mechanic in a shop near there. He buys dead cars at auction and fixes them up for a negligible profit, just to get them back on the road. I can try and track down his number, but I'm not sure if he'll still have the same one, or if he's still working in the area. Last I'd called him was about two years ago.
So, um, my dad is selling our BMW. It kinda sorta meets your specifications. It's a '95 540i. The transmission is automatic with an optional clutchless manual sequential shift... kinda like tiptronic, but different shift motion. for the kind of engine it has (V8) it gets alright mileage, around 20 mpg. It's a relatively small car. It's not as small as a BMW 3series, but it's much smaller than the big luxury 7 series. It's a sports sedan. As far as wear and tear goes, mostly it's just cosmetic, the engine runs as well as it ever could at it's 150,000 miles. Clean title, no accidents, no theft record. KBB lists the price at around $7000, but my dad would be willing to sell it for $5000. I know that's not in your price range, but I just thought I'd give you the option. It's a really fun car to drive... and it's very fast.
