Actually they are about the consequences of the decline and eventual death of 'god', and the ensuing war for power and control. He may be 'anti-all religions'; i couldnt say since ive never read anything autobiographical. But, the mythos and characters used in the books are definitely christian/abrahamic in origen.
As to whether the 'His Dark Materials' series is anti-all-religion.. i dont want to spoil the series ending for anyone.

No matter what your religion, the books (which are still a fiction) are thought provoking and well written as a story, with a hefty dose of particle physics thrown in also.

P.S. Breda i totally respect your work, your writing and your views. I'm just really worked up about this one...its just one in a long line of religion vs. literature stories and one of my pet peeves.

Heh...we saw the preview for this at Thanksgiving at the exes'. 'Yote and I expressed interest in seeing it and maybe taking the kids. The ex-ex, Jessica (who has an LJ now, btw, tho she hasn't done anything with it yet) said she'd have to see it first because it's "anti-catholic". We both said huh? and then Michael started agreeing with her, saying "the Magisterium" (the name of the dictatorship in the book/movie) was specifically a catholic term that referred to the teaching authority of the church. Okay...*shrug* And we care because...? But then, I remembered Jess did the whole "I'm not pagan I'm going to a Catholic church" thing during the custody battle, and Michael and Lissa are both former catholics...so...okay. Whatever. *shrug again* Never expected consistance from Jess, though. Ever.
