seems to be a case of 'you gotta help yourself'. you can give him a hand if he reaches for it. but you can't make him move into a direction he doesn't want to. it will suck you in and wring you dry...

it's really hard to watch someone you love hurt themselves. it's even more difficult to find all your efforts in vain.

could you have made a difference? I dunno - wasn't there/don't know enough. at some point, you have to give yourself a break...you can't be everything to everyone. you _have_ to put your health and happiness first.
