Coraline

Coraline is one of my favourite books. So, unsurprisingly, the movie was quite hit-and-miss. The visuals were gorgeous, but I suppose I was expecting a darker movie. Sombre colours, light and shade play, and a soundtrack to match that of American McGee's Alice. Instead, even though the animation was quirky and detailed and beautiful, to me the ( Read more... )

I didn't realize that Coraline was a book. I wanted to rent it last week but didn't get a chance. Now I'm not sure if I'd rather go get the book first!

If you lived closer, I'd lend it to you =)

I don't know...it might be better to see the movie first, because the book is better (imo) but at the same time I prefer to read books first so I can picture the characters my own way before I see someone else's interpretation of them.

Ooh! Okay, now I want to see it just for the monstrous feminine aspect. Although yes, I am kinda appalled at the invention of a new character --- screw with Gaiman's skilful plan, HDU! --- and quite troubled by what you say about the PoC interpretation.

And yah, I totally am with you on the visualisation of Coraline by McKean versus Selick. Which is prolly why the mere poster put me off the film.

*sigh* I still say I wish they would stop trying to film Gaiman. He doesn't need filming. He is just that good.

Yep, the monstrous feminine aspect was really interesting - Selick did a great job with that.

I don't know if I'd go see any future films based on Gaiman's work (probably, though - otherwise how would I be able to complain about them in great detail, lol.) Similarly, I'm considering not seeing the new Alice film, but, again, I don't think I'll be able to stay away.

*squawk* You are MOST CERTAINLY going to see the new Alice film, even if I have to drag you by the hair! *coughs* I mean, Depp with scary eyes! Hathaway as the White Queen! Okay, just for the costumes, I'm sure it will be worth the ticket.

And hee, yes, if only so you can complain about it in great detail. I'm so glad somebody else does that beside me. Hee hee hee.

Ooohh, didn't realise Hathaway's the White Queen! That's cool.

I'm just a bit over the Burton - Bonham-Carter - Depp film!love triangle - it almost feels like every Burton movie has the same characters in it, just...dressed up differently. I still love Depp...don't get me wrong. I think it's just Burton that I'm a bit over. I adore his aesthetic, but his story-telling hasn't evolved that much over the years.

And Alice is like...a sacred text. It's weird and wonderful and witty and so, so widely influential. I just want it to be done right.

I haven't even seen the Disney adaptation, although I heard it's not completely woeful.

I've not yet seen the film, but have heard a lot of comment on the introduction of Wybie. The most charitable explanation I've heard is that he was put in to give a voice for exposition, but overwhelmingly there is agreement that he was superfluous.

Pffft, exposition. Some people should have more faith in their intended audience.

Have you read the book?
