Ice storm! Everybody panic!

The weather goons are expecting some frozen rain tonight. I'm staying off the roads -- not because it's actually going to be bad but because I want to avoid the usual mass freakout that occurs anytime the least bit of frozen precipitation hits the ground here. We get that here too - one of my Alaskan friends calls it "snow psychosis", where people who've moved here from California see snowflakes falling, panic, and drive right off the road.

Higher elevations in western Wahington can get a lot of snow - and we do have quite a bit of significantly higher elevation around here - but in the lowlands near the water, we get a few inches a year, barely enough to build a decent snowman, and it seldom lasts more than a day.

wry grin I don't call that "snow" - where I lived back East, we always had a white Christmas, often preceded by a white Thanksgiving, with intermittent blizzards right through till Spring. Heh, my last year in Ohio, we had one hit on April 7th; in about 3 hours it dumped enough snow on my little yard for us to build an 8-foot-tall snowman there. The best we ever get around here is what I'd have called "snow flurries" then ( ... )
