I love my bathroom/tub cleaner; it smells nice, it works really well, but it has come to my attention that it's pretty nasty stuff. I want to switch over to a greener/less toxic cleaning solution, so I ask the opinion of my buddies who use enviro-friendly cleaners: what do you recommend? I've heard good things about simply using baking powder mixed ( Read more... )

I've got a bunch of Method supplies. You can find them at Bartell's or Target I think. I worked on a cleaning crew in college, and that was the line we were to use most of the time - the boss didn't want us regularly exposed to the harsher stuff. I'm not sure how natural it is, but they're supposed to be pretty benign for the user and the environment. They smell nice too!

For scrubbing out the sink or the toilet, I had some soy-based mint-scented cleaner that I just used up after 3 years. You don't really need much for those surfaces if you clean them every 1-2 weeks. I'm sure vinegar or baking soda or just water would work fine too.

The bathtub is the only PITA area in the bathroom. Again, make sure you do it regularly and you shouldn't need anything heavy-duty. Also really important, watch what soaps you use! My old boss said Dove bar soaps were the worst, though really, any bar soap tends to dissolve, then re-harden to cake onto your tub. Liquid shower gels and soaps are the way to go in that regard.

I second Bon Ami. Green cleaning products are hit or miss but Bon Ami is decent. In fact, some of the stuff marketed as "green" isn't green at all. You mostly want to avoid anything that contains phosphorous and also anything that is harmful for you and your family. Aside from Bon Ami I tend to use Meyer's glass cleaner and Ecover dishwashing soap (makes for a great kitchen cleaner.)

Borax was my Zelda weapon of choice against fleas. I love it, however people don't like how scratchy it is.

"Bon Ami" is the cleanser I recommend. Also, Windex can clean anything and everything.
