I'm really sick of hearing people say, 'it's just the flu, people need to stop freaking out and go about their lives'.

H1N1 is not "just the flu".

What I've been hearing people say is more like "you're way less likely to get swine flu than you are 'the flu'", which I'm inclined to believe is true. It's not that people believe swine flu is less deadly than the regular flu. It's that people feel like the likelihood of them getting swine flu is really not high enough that we need to be freaking out and taking more precautions than we would normally take to protect ourselves from contagious illness. Unless I've grossly misunderstood something (which I have been known to do, of course!), the normal precautions that one would take to protect oneself from the regular flu are normal precautions to take to protect oneself from swine flu.

The precautions one would take to avoid the seasonal flu are the same as what you would do to protect yourself against h1n1, yes. The way the number of reported and confirmed cases has been jumping, the likelihood of you coming in contact with someone with H1N1 is growing everyday. You're contagious before you know you're sick ( ... )

Yeah...see, that's the thing, I'm personally way more worried about the racism pandemic than I am about the swine flu pandemic. Swine flu isn't making people hate on immigrants...scaring the crap out of people by telling them that this horrible deadly illness from Mexico is going to kill them is.

No it isn't "just the flu" but honestly, there's not much anyone can do about it more than they can seasonal flu. People need to use their fucking heads and stay home if they are sick...regardless of what kind of flu it is. Causing widespread panic will NOT help anyone. And from a biological aspect...viruses are here for a reason. That reason is population control. Pandemic disease is natural. Thousands of people die every year from the "regular" flu...

H1N1 is certainly not “just the flu”. The World Health Organization has even been quoted as saying that it’s “relatively mild” ¹. As far as the worries of the cytokine storm, Wikipedia says (in a remarkably well-sourced article):

While some media outlets have speculated that this virus could cause a cytokine storm in patients, there is presently no evidence for this hypothesis, with the CDC stating that there is "insufficient information to date about clinical complications of this variant of swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus infection."

As for the more common flu, it’s nothing to be trifled with-the WHO reports that the worldwide death toll exceeds a few hundred thousand every year ².

What does "exceeds a few hundred thousand" mean? I expect better from you, Joshua.
