“Kairn! Come here!” Sethan calls from up on deck.

Dropping the laundry he’s been folding on his bed, Kairn sighs. “You’re not sick again, are you?”

“No, I think I’m finally past that.”

“What, then? Something wrong with the boat?” He’s heading for the steps, but slowly, not sure he really wants to go up and deal with whatever it is just yet.

“Nothing is wrong with the boat. Would you get up here already?”

Kairn finds him at the rail, with his arms gently folded across it instead of the white knuckled grip he’s seen so often. “What’s all the fuss?”

“Look,” says Sethan, sweeping a hand out over the water.

The bay is calm, deep blue waters gently lapping at the hull. Sky and water meet at the horizon, the soft pinks and purples of the evening clouds reflected on the water’s surface. Gulls swoop above and boats drift below and not a thing looks even remotely out of place.

“I don’t see anything,” says Kairn.

Sethan turns to him, one brow arched. “You don’t see anything?”

“No. What am I supposed to be looking at?”

“The sunset,” says Sethan. He sounds downright cheerful about, and Kairn feels a little guilty for the degree to which he finds that unsettling.

“It’s… a sunset.” It’s not a particularly spectacular one. The sky is not aflame with crimson clouds, no rainbows, no scattered beams of brilliant light. Just the muted pinks as the sun dips out of sight as it does every night.

“I’ve never really looked at one before.”

He’s gazing at the heavens with such wonder, Kairn just has to ask, “Are you sure you’re not ill?” That earns him a sharp scowl from Sethan. “Kidding!” he says, backing up a pace.

Sethan shrugs and offers him a crooked smile. “For once, finally, I think everything really is all right.”
