How do you escape when your fantasies prove as dangerous as your reality?
It's such a beautiful movie and your interpretation is lovely. I loved it, despite the ending, as I really dislike stories that end in ways that suggest the fantasy elements were all a dream, and this story, while somewhat ambiguous on that point, seemed to be leaning in that direction. But, your simple comment makes me rethink the story and what it was saying. Thank you.
I struggled a lot with how to convey that ambiguity in the ending (because I do think del Toro was leaning ever so slightly towards the 'all in her head' reading), and though I wanted to end with Ofelia in "this world", as the end result of all that surrounded her, I couldn't resist leaving her with that smallest of smiles.
Beautiful! Love the song choice--I downloaded this immediately based on that, because I agree that tonally it's very 'Pan's Labyrinth'. It was mesmerising--thank you.
