Nice. I have a question. Do you like slow films with little action? All of the best 'sad/depressing' films that I know of are like that.
Keeping the 'slow' thing in mind... if you want some suggestions right off the bat... these are listed roughly from 'fastest' paced to 'slowest' paced.
The Cranes Are Flying. Soviet. 1957. About a woman whose boyfriend/fiance goes to fight in The War.
Kanal. Poland. 1957. Warsaw is divided between the Germans and the Russians, and it's in ruins. A section of the Polish army attempts to escape from one section to the other via the sewers.
The Seventh Continent. Austria. 1989. On reserve right now in Canaday for Prof Gorfinkel's class. It's about a family of three in Austria, and the life of every family member basically embodies 'quiet despair.'
