Summary: Enrico, Integra, and the loss of faith.
"I don't want to trust anyone ever again," Integra said, brushing soft tendrils of hair away from her face. "If Walter can turn dark.... I just won't trust anyone."
"That man out there isn't Walter," Enrico declared. "He wears Walter's face, perhaps walks with his step -- but it's a twisted mockery. The man who served your family so well and so long is gone, murdered by the thing that took his place."
She chewed on her bottom lip. She didn't want to take comfort from Enrico Maxwell, of all people, and she certainly didn't want to admit.... "You're right," she said eventually, and it didn't quite physically pain her to do so.
He had the good grace to look awkward, and they sat in silence for a few moments. "You're not going to try and renew my faith in humanity, are you? Reassure me that it's all right to trust, or some nonsense like that?"
"No," he assured her, "I lost my faith in humanity long ago. I place my trust only in God, and these days, I'm beginning to suspect Him too."
She wasn't quite sure that he was joking, but she smiled anyway. Better to laugh than to weep, Walter had always said.
