i loove wallpaper but agree about the rental thing... it's a different sort of investment (labor-intensive but super cheap), but i am painting a wallpaper stencil in my bathroom. see it here:

I saw that before, it's gorgeous! Thank goodness you mentioned that stencil site because I've been trying to find that for a while and for some reason never found it. Doh! I was thinking of doing the cherry blossom print, or the fish scale print, as a backsplash in the kitchen...

i like wallpaper! but yeah, i wouldn't spend the money in a rental (i'm sure if i put some up my slumlord wouldn't care, but it's not worth it). i'm thinking of painting fake wallpaper. this bookstore i go to sometimes (type books, i don't think it was open when you came here) has a really pretty damask pattern painted onto the wall and i swear i thought it was wallpaper at first.

Oooh! You should look at Lara's link above, her apartment is pretty sweet and is doing just that to her bathroom! I'm definitely going to do something like that in my next apartment.
