Oh my gosh, I'm tearing up just thinking about that final scene. I love their story so much.

I think it's the simplicity that makes it: from the small story excerpts to the end, we get enough details to catch our hearts but nothing graphical that forces "ohmygawdthisistragic". The end scene in particular I think is so powerful because we don't see faces: just two silhouettes of what could be in a very classic background.
