She stares down. "I wish it was like that," she whispers. "Water under the bridge." When she looks up, there are tears in her eyes. "But it's not. He's never going to forgive me." She shrugs hopelessly. "I'm never going to forgive me."
Nathan pats her awkwardly on the shoulder. "He just needs time. His head knows it wasn't you. His heart just needs to catch up."
She nods, wiping her nose with one slender hand. "Yeah. Yeah, of course you're right." Then, quietly, "I hope you're right."
He kisses her on the forehead, and it's hard to know if he's taking it too far. "I am. It'll be fine."
She just nods again and stares down at the river.
He's considering how best to get out of there when she looks up.
"Boy, you are really good at bullshit, aren't you?" The wry tone tells him he's not talking to Niki anymore. "I guess that's what made you such a great politician." She turns toward him and steps close, trailing her index finger up his arm and making him shiver.
"So, are you going to tell me what I want to hear?" she asks, breathing against his ear.
He knows she could kill him with a flick of her wrist, and somehow, that's part of the appeal.
"My room is open and D.L. is on a recon run," he says, and he wonders if his half-smile is as wicked as hers.
"Oh," she breathes, looping her arm through his. "You're good."
