They both wear masks. Nick thinks about it sometimes when he looks at Eddie, sniffing the air or watching a girl in a red dress, hunger in his eyes. Eddie's is clearer, and sometimes Nick thinks he sees it even when the wolf is quiet, lying just under the skin, accentuating the sharpness of Eddie's brow, the tips of his ears.

It bothered him at first, but now he watches when Eddie's not looking and touches his own face absently. What is it that makes him Grimm, that makes them look at him, full of awe and fear and hate? Is there something about himself that he can't see? Something horrifying?

“What do you see?” he asks Eddie one day, running his fingers along the planes of his own face.

Eddie looks at him, puzzled. His eyes go to Nick's hand and Nick sees the sudden understanding. Eddie shrugs and looks away. “You,” Eddie says finally. “Just...you.”

Later, Nick runs his thumb against wiry fur for the first time, tracing the line of Eddie's jaw and cheekbone until Eddie finally relaxes.

In this mask or the other, he realizes, all he sees anymore is Eddie.
