I think you are right that those are the things that make life. I mean, the theory of a pleasure-seeking life that I'm beginning to adopt would say that spending time on your appearance and tanning are things that make you feel good so its not a waste to do them as long as they're worth it to you (those things are definately worth it to me, personally). Like whatever we learned in economics, understanding and acknowledging the opportunity cost of your actions is what is really important.
Worrying about things that didn't happen or "may not" happen is really time wasted because it accomplishes nothing and only makes you feel worse. Taking that time and spending it doing what is going on right now, what is possible in the moment, is time better spent.
We don't know when life ends, so always doing the "right" thing (right according to "society") isn't always the right thing for yourself.
