vernacular question

so, today i was telling a story to 2 women. they are both from San Diego - although one has also lived in texas and hawaii. anyway, the story started off, "I was sitting on the stoop of the hotel..." and one of the women was like "what's a stoop?" Nope, because you hear ALL kinds of people saying it in those old movies that take place in NYC. It's an old and out of date word that most don't use anymore, but it's certainly not a Mid-West thing at all. She's just not heard it before so she attributed it to you're being from StL. Sad but true.
