I'm still charging away on my WIP -- just a few chapters from the end -- writing furiously as the expression goes.

Yeah, I used to explain too much. Once I learned to trust the reader more, I think my writing improved. Sometimes my critiquers understood; sometimes I had to explain what was going on--and had to put some details back in.

I now aim for subtlety. It's a fine line between too much and not enough, and not everyone agrees where it lies.
